First Time Teacher/Mentor Workshop

Sunday and Monday, August 15-16th, will be our annual First Time Teacher/Mentor Workshop held at Christ Lutheran Church and School in Costa Mesa, CA.  This is a “not to be missed” event for those teachers who are new to your staff, new to a grade level, new to the district, or BRAND NEW to teaching preschool through grade 8!  You will also want to consider identifying a mentor for each new teacher and send them to this workshop as well.  Grade-level sessions for first-time teachers are led by experienced and creative teachers and mentor training is led by Rachel Klitzing. This entire workshop provides an important structure of support for new teachers.

Please note that we have a special in-service day planned as well for you to send your entire staff to on Monday August 16th entitled “To a Great School Year…And Beyond!”  This can be used for entire staff in-service during your Back-to-School training!  This day will be led by two top presenters in our district.   Pastor Mike Gibson from Christ, Costa Mesa, will lead a session on being a Missional Leader in the Classroom.  Paul Brandt, PSD School Consultant for Strategic Planning and Marketing, will present on the topic “Teachers as Marketing Tools”.

Even if your school doesn’t have a new teacher, you are encouraged to attend this fabulous opportunity for in-service training!

Arizona Teacher In-Service Day

On Friday, September 3rd, at Christ Lutheran, Phoenix, we are honored once again to present Rick Morris as our special speaker at the Arizona Teacher’s Conference. Rick is an award-winning and recognized specialist in the field of classroom management and student motivation.  He is a gifted speaker with a proven talent for motivating educators of all ages. Rick Morris's up-beat, on-target workshop will inspire the teachers at your school to incorporate his exciting, innovative management tools into their classrooms on a daily basis.

At this event Rick will be speaking about Interactive Discipline. Rick presents this workshop based upon the concept that “’Discipline is teaching, not punishment.’  This fast-paced, up-beat workshop will present a variety of techniques that will help you create a happier, more productive classroom.” We encourage your entire faculty, early childhood too, to attend his workshop.  The fee is $25.00 per person, continental breakfast and lunch included.  Click here to learn more about the presentation, here for registration information and here for the day’s schedule.

Summer Math Coaching Institute

The CAPSO Committee is pleased to announce a five-day Mathematics Coaching Institute at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles August 9-13.  David Foster and his colleagues at Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative are highly regarded in the mathematics field. This week-long institute would be valuable for administrators and curriculum directors, as well classrooms teachers. Click here for more information and a registration form.

NAEP TESTING PROGRAM INFORMATION

From January 24 through March 4, 2011, NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) will be administered by NAEP representatives in mathematics and reading at grades 4 and 8, science at grade 8, and writing at grades 8 and 12.  The writing assessment will be computer-based. This test has always been a PR opportunity for our schools, especially when reported separately. With strong participation, we are very hopeful that sharing the scores of Lutheran schools can be
a useful tool for PR and recruitment.  Click here to read the attached letter from Bill Cochran for more information.
