On Friday, January 13, 2012, 16 coach busses pulled up to Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School in Las Vegas and loaded up 661 Middle School students and 58 chaperones and headed to 35 different locations in the Las Vegas valley as part of the 5th annual Middle School Service Event at Faith Lutheran. Students spent hours serving others at venues such as US Veterans Home, St. Jude’s Ranch (abused children), Opportunity Village (intellectually disabled adults), Las Vegas Rescue Mission, Lied Senior Care Center, and several inner city public schools. Students read, painted, cleaned, held, laughed, taught, filed, organized, supervised, prepared, hugged, listened, assisted, helped, and loved.
Prior to boarding the busses the students met in the Chapel/Performing Arts Center where Middle School Principal Sarah Heislen reminded everyone that "today is not about you." The students took those words to heart and put others ahead of themselves. Several network television crews reported on the story, and the Las Vegas Review Journal did a feature article on the day.
The students came back for an assembly at the end of the day and took turns giving their testimonies about their experiences. As one young man wisely noted at the closing assembly, "They helped us more than we helped them." It truly is more blessed to give than to receive.
